Grupo Fantasma
"This freight train of a Latin band could easily hold its own in a sweaty bandbox in the Bronx...they'll knock you down with the grooves." -The Village Voice "The adventurous music offspring of Los Lobos and Mano Negra." -Memphis Commercial Appeal "One of the sickest live bands ever." -The Philadelphia Weekly When people think of the music scene in Austin, Texas, great singer/songwriters, funky blues, old-fashioned country twang and imaginative rock bands come to mind. Grupo Fantasma is likely to explode that notion. Who is Grupo Fantasma? Music fans and critics agree: they are simply the best band in Austin today. Hailing from such far-flung places as New York City, Managua, Nicaragua, and Laredo, Texas, Fantasma consists of a versatile and talented cast of characters that includes a double rhythm section and four piece horn brigade. The band successfully obliterates the cliches that often plague the current Latin music market, all the while keeping their feet firmly planted in the traditions that they love and deeply respect. A raucous horde of musical wizards and freaks, they transform traditional Latin styles of music with their skillful songwriting, inventive arrangements and exuberant live shows. They fuse afro-latin funk, cumbia, salsa, merengue and more into an intoxicating whole. It’s a sound that demands audiences move - forget about chairs, don’t even think of sitting down when Grupo Fantasma is in town. Their 2004 release “Movimiento Popular” earned raves and year-end kudos from the Austin media, as well as publications in Atlanta, Memphis, Philadelphia and New York’s Village Voice. It featured special guest artists Ragah El, who introduces the band in classic dancehall style, Tejano music legend Ruben Ramos (Los Super Seven), and DMC champion DJ Baby G, who contributed to a track on Fantasma’s first album. Grupo Fantasma has been named the Austin Music Awards’ Best Latin Contemporary Band for four years running, adding Best Horns in 2005. They have shared stages with acts as remarkably diverse as Los Lobos, Patti Smith, Ozomatli, Jackson Browne, Flaco Jimenez and KRS-One. A large ensemble that is not afraid of the road, they have packed venues in the U.S. and Mexico, large and small, on word of mouth alone.
